Sidmouth Town Council, through its Environment Committee and as part of its commitment to help improve the general appearance of the Sid Valley, has recently finished cleaning road traffic signs.
The Council appreciates just how much residents take pride in the appearance of the town and alongside initiatives to help weed and clean roadsides in the Sid Valley, it had not gone unnoticed by Councillors that many road traffic signs (not street name signs) were in need of attention. Such signs may be installed for safety reasons, to give directions or to warn of hazards and are in many cases an important part of traffic regulation and safely driving in the valley whether a resident or visitor. Although the installation and cleaning of road signs is not the responsibility of the Town Council but of Devon County Council, it was felt that the Town Council could assist.
Devon County Council had arranged for the street signs along the A3052 to be cleaned before May and the Town Council approached local contractor Colin Lovatt to clean signs in the rest of the Valley. Over 6 days, signs from Putts Corner to Salcombe Regis, Bowd to Muttersmoor, Sidbury to the Esplanade and in between were cleaned. The signs which in many cases were greened over with algae and moss obscuring their information and in many cases preventing proper use, are now sparkling clean, clear and readable to provide their information.
Members are hopeful that residents and visitors alike, notice and appreciate the difference.
