‘We asked, you told us, we listened’
New youth service for Sidmouth is coming
Sidmouth’s young people will have a new youth service from September, branded Y@S (youth @ sidmouth). Following a two year thorough review of services, driven by the needs and wants of young people in the valley, Sidmouth Town Council are launching a new youth service.
Open access sessions run by a partnership with the Sidmouth International School will start at the ‘Old Exchange’ building in the town centre next week. Running from 5 – 7pm with 11-14 years on Tuesdays and 15-17 years on Wednesdays.
Entry is free until half term after which each week will cost £1 – which includes a drink, fruit and a snack. Sidmouth International School activity leaders will run these sessions. Our valley’s young people told us how much they loved this flexible venue in a trial in June earlier this year.
Resources include pool table, table football, table tennis, cinema/gaming and karaoke room, craft and chillout room and plenty of room to catch up with friends in a welcoming and relaxed space. The 15 to 17 age group is new and for our older young people that told us how much they would value somewhere relaxing to hang out with friends.

The service will be backed by a dedicated website designed in conjunction with Sidmouth College students. Social media channels will communicate with young people and caregivers directly.
September also sees the launch of the councils ‘Get Involved Grants’ scheme, which is designed to help young people from lower income households join clubs and organisations within the valley.
In addition, outreach services and re-designed skills sessions are planned for the near future.
At a time when youth services are being cut nationally, Sidmouth Town Council remains committed to delivering and evolving provision in the Sid Valley, to meet the changing needs and aspirations of all our young people.
Cllr Rachel Perram, Chair of Youth Provision said “We are so excited to be launching Y@S. Everything we do is being driven by our young people. 80% of respondents to our large survey told us that they wanted a safe, warm indoor space in which to relax and socialise with their friends – particularly during winter months. We believe that this building, which was purpose made for young people will be perfect and we can’t wait to welcome you.”
