Explore beyond the garden gate of this innovative community project, running to nearly half an acre. The Community Food Forest at Sidford is unlike many other gardens in that it is a community garden run by volunteers, is open to everyone 24/7, with an objective of providing food whilst increasing biodiversity and social cohesion. It is only two years old and is far from maturity, but the seven layers of a typical food forest are already evident. From canopy trees to small trees, and climbers underplanted with perennial herbaceous, root, fruit and leaf crops, it breaks from the traditional feel of organised garden rows and follows a random permaculture design ethos… just like nature designed. From mulberries to tea olives there are various interesting plants throughout.
