Hutchinson, known as POH, was Sidmouth’s most important Victorian resident and probably the most important in its entire history. He was an historian, artist, geologist, archaeologist and musician. His written output was prodigious, and his Diaries and History of Sidmouth remain invaluable. He never married and possessed inherited wealth, which allowed him to do exactly what he wished. However, his Diaries reveal him to be ungenerous and unsympathetic to those less fortunate than him, contrary to the Victorian model of enlightened philanthropy.
The talk will be preceded by a very brief East Devon branch AGM
